Florence and Tuscany

Florence – Tuscany’s regional capital spreads along the banks of the Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas, almost in the middle of the Italian peninsula. An historic gem set amidst the green backdrop and rolling hills of Tuscany.

Stroll down the streets of Florence, admire historical squares and buildings, ancient churches, beautiful monuments and more and you will envy the cities half a million inhabitants. Visit Piazza della Signori, one of the main squares of the city, where you can admire a copy of Michelangelo’s David (the original is in the Accademia Gallery museum) and Neptune’s Fountain, by Ammanati, which symbolizes the Medici’s maritime ambitions. Palazzo Vecchio is adorned with frescoes by Vasari and by Michelangelo’s Genius of Victory marble statue.

Founded by the Romans in the first century B.C., Florence succumbed to the decadence of the barbaric ages before its rebirth reaching its pinnacle of medieval civilization between the 11th and 15th centuries, a free city, which “balanced” the authority of the Emperors with that of the Popes.

The Medici family took Florence to the height of its glory in art and culture, in politics and economic power during the 15th to 18th centuries before being succeeded by the House of Lorraine.

If you have enough time in Florence you can explore Florence’s intriguing history through the cities monuments, art galleries and museums!! However, given the beauty and attractions of Tuscany’s countryside you will probably not have enough time during one visit.
