11 December to 15 December 2013 – Cyprus Visit

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

To finish off 2013 we spent 4 days in Cyprus on our own Fam Trip.

We started with the best Meet & Greet in Cyprus – Evie and Robina from Event Makers kicked off our personal Cyprus Fam by chauffeuring us to the Londa Hotel in Limassol.

Fourteen hotels, ten dinner/gala dinner venues (eleven if you count our best dining experience – at home with Robina and Demetris) plus three off site conference spaces. All packed into three days with Sunday to walk the beach and lunch late in the old port/town.

See our company Facebook for more details and our photos.

Hotels

Our thanks to the great team at The Londa for a delightful stay and the upgrade. The sunset views were remarkable and staff efficiently friendly.

Thursday we started with the Four Seasons – walking though reception and into the hotel is like entering the Tardis. So many spaces and areas, intimate restaurants (6 in all) and more that you forget this is a large hotel. The Four Seasons gardens and pools are designed the same way. You feel as though you are exploring rather than being lost in just another large hotel.

We then saw a brilliant contrast – The Amathus Hotel Limassol. The Amathus has a lovely clean, modern, light feel with great spaces. We loved the executive wing which we believe would be great for small incentive groups. Four floors of nine garden suites. These rooms come complete with own pool and private garden. They are so popular they are often booked a year or more ahead.

These two hotels will combine well to provide conference spaces and breakouts for large conferences with the benefit of being separated by a few minutes’ walk along the beach front.

Friday was Paphos day and old friends at Aphrodite Hills Resort. On to The Columbia Beach Resort (Pissouri)  -  what a beautiful escape  – set in its own bay along with its sister hotel Columbia Beach. The Columbia Beach Resort , with Paphos a short drive away, is great for incentives, retreats and small conferences or  meetings where privacy is required. For larger groups you can combine Columbia Beach Resort with its sister hotel.

Two more sisters – Annabelle and Almyra – were next along with lunch with Sophia in the Annabelle.

The Annabelle has a timeless style that just works with great views towards the port and Paphos castle and so handy for the bars, restaurants and clubs of Paphos.  While the Almyra is modern, clean with a light contemporary simple decor.  The Almyra meeting spaces are a great blank canvas – ideal for those who wish to theme and dress a venue.  The hotels share a lovely beach, the views and will mix and match as required for larger groups/conferences.

Last, but it could never be least – The Elysium. You have to see this hotel to appreciate the application of a simple concept that creates a beautiful luxury hotel. The Elysium is great for high end incentives, conferences up to 200 and private meetings.

Dinner Venues

Good food and wine are essential to great events  and  Cyprus produces plenty of each.

We started with dinner on Wednesday at the Carob Mill – an atmospheric dinner venue with conference spaces close to Limassol castle. Lovely food and great Cypriot wines.  On Thursday we lunched at The Londa as Evie and Robina were invited to the Londa’s annual pre Christmas supplier lunch and dined at the Four Seasons. Nick Aristou, the Executive Director, kindly invited us all to dinner – can there be a better Chinese restaurant in Cyprus than the Four Seasons – all of the Seasons Oriental chefs are from Hong Kong!!! This is a lovely intimate restaurant serving some fabulous Oriental dishes with a Four Seasons twist.

You can dine on a ship’s bridge – this restaurant, with its ship’s bridge shape looks as if it belongs on a mega yacht – or you can dine out of town, informally, by the beach for truly great seafood.

We loved the two wineries – each produces superb wine – but for ambience are like chalk and cheese. One traditional and the other modern.

For impressive gala dinners spaces we loved the Carob Mill, Limassol Marina Conference Space, and Kouklia all great spaces to dress/light and from over one hundred years to a few centuries old. For the truly different and so impressive there is a unique open air atmospheric venue dedicated to Cyprus and Art whose owner hosts private charity events.

Limassol Marina

Exciting times for Limassol as the new Limassol Marina is close to opening – potentially by mid 2014.

And on Friday morning we had a show round of this exciting new development.

A number of luxury villas and apartments are already occupied, the Marina is fully functional for yachts and last year saw a 77 metre mega yacht berthing. Shops, restaurants and gym are nearing completion with many units already taken.

Limassol Marina will be a yachting paradise come next summer. If you are fortunate enough to own a luxury yacht you can tie up and tune in/communicate thanks to the Med’s most technologically advanced marina. Fibre optic broadband and TV channels on tap for each berth.

The marina facilities will be fabulous – high end shops, great restaurants, gym, villas and up market versions of fast food outlets.

An old renovated warehouse provides an atmospheric gala dinner venue or interesting event space  complete with its own cinema. We think that the conference facilities will work well for events that combine a short conference with an incentive. You can have a morning conference session, lunch in a great restaurant and spend an afternoon on the water.

Limassol Marina when complete will be the best luxury Marina in the Mediterranean and will be able to berth 100 metre mega yachts.

August 2013 – Fun in Funchal

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014

Fun in Funchal  – Madeira was amazing.

Madeira is an island of such abundance. A riot of colours and scents from its exotic fruits, flowers, shrubs, crops and trees – both native and imported from around the world. Plant it in Madeira and it grows. An island of mountains, valleys and high cliffs blessed with sunshine, high temperatures and ample water surrounded by seas of blue and emerald green.

Add a seemingly endless supply of local fish, beaches, smart shops, fun activities, stylish hotels and Funchal streets filled with relaxing live music from cafes/bars/restaurants and you have a destination that feels, sounds, looks, tastes and smells so good.

We arrived on a Monday for a one week stay and by Wednesday we were sorely tempted to add a few days.

de Vine Hotel

As this was our first time in Madeira we decided that the centre of Funchal was the place to be – our design hotel  – de Vine – was funky and cool and at 55 sq metres our junior suite had plenty of room as do the basic rooms at 35 sq metres.

The roof top pool and bar, along with the main restaurant have great views over Funchal – hills and mountains in most directions along with city centre and sea views. Most all of Funchal is walkable from de Vine  – gardens, the old city, restaurants and more. Talking of walking and more – for those who love shoes,  Funchal is a great place to shop.

Dinner In The Old City

Can you imagine a long street with the front door of every second or third house an artist’s canvas!! Some weird, some abstract many beautiful. Now add a host of colourful restaurants, tables on the street and live music  – the mandolin and guitar backing voices along with the smells of great food and hot night cooled with a breeze.

We entered the street from the far end after a day sunbathing outside of Funchal and found a tiny family run restaurant. Singing waiters are not unusual but we were entertained by an ex-professional singer turned chef, the mother, daughter, son-in law and daughter in law. They sang while cooking, serving and pouring wine.

Open Jeep 4×4

This option is so much better for viewing Madeira than the normal 4×4 tours. Once you are away from the main roads it is possible to stand up to enjoy the spectacular views offered throughout the Island.

There is a choice of East, West and the entire Island tour. We decided to go for the more dramatic scenery of East and a stopover on the north coast. We were told that the West coast is so much more beautiful in terms of the masses of flowering plants – however the East coast plants looked spectacular.

During our tour we learnt how eco friendly Madeira is – the entire Island is organically “farmed” and the majority of power generation is sustainable – solar panels and wind turbines.

If we go back there is a great beachside restaurant, accessible only by sea or via a lift descent of 250 metres, in a beautiful bay populated by 23 families.  The 23 families have specialised in the same crops for many decades and used to barter the crops for their other living needs. We are told the sea food at the restaurant is wonderful and can just imagine a catamaran sunset cruise with canapés, pre-dinner drinks and music delivering us for a great dinner.

As for the rest of the day the pictures speak for themselves.

Sunset Catamaran Cruise

We took the tourist version – Dolphin watching and swimming at the base of Europe’s second cliff (almost 600 metres) in beautiful warm clear seas as the sunset provided a spectacular photo opportunity- at least for those whose camera battery still had charge!!!

Festival On the Mountain

From every small village right up to towns and cities there is a patron saint’s festival. In Funchal the festival is for the Holy Mother and it was held on Thursday 15 August. As we saw on our Island tour every village/town is brightly decorated and in the evening there is music and dancing with barbecued foods and much drinking.

The festival is held the night before and we took the cable car up the mountain. Imagine the air filled with smoke and music as a few thousand people stroll around, dance and drink. If you have the appetite try one of the giant beef skewers. Multiple butchers’ stalls housing a few sides of beef. The beef is diced  and piled onto huge freshly cut sticks. As we did not think we could eat 3 feet of skewered beef between us we settled for a barbecued chicken, flattened and cooked whole then chopped into pieces – delicious  - along with a Madeiran speciality flat bread.

Dining In Funchal

There are so many choices – under the stars, by the marina, at the top of an old fort and a old city street dine around. The sea almost dominates the menus but the fish are superb. We loved the  chicken on a stone – why do UK chickens taste so bland in comparison??

Some Other Activities

Extreme Activity

Need to cool down!!! Try Canyoning.

This activity is not for the faint hearted or those lacking reasonable fitness.  Descend from 1500 metres to the sea anyway you can – slipping, swimming, jumping and rappelling down a mountain river.

A Stunning Hike in a Laurissilvia Forest/UNESCO World Heritage Site. The emerald green Levadas of Madeira are one of nature’s rare beauties. Pristine protected forests, crystal clear waterfalls and walks through basalt “tunnels” await. A few hours of escapism.

17 October to 19 October 2013 – Marrakech Fam Trip

Monday, October 28th, 2013

From experiencing Africa’s roof to a Feng Shui themed hotel this was a Fam Trip that amazed and chilled.

We started with a VIP Meet & Greet desk just inside passport control organised by Chakib at Across Morocco to provide Penguins and their guests with a faster passage through the airport.

Marrakech is only twenty minutes from the airport – so just long enough for us to appreciate the warm sunshine – 30 degrees was so much better than the UK in October.

Walking into the Sofitel Lounge and Spa is always a delight – the glorious scent used throughout the hotel is a real feel good factor.

Post a most welcome Sofitel cocktail and quick freshen up we started with a show round at the legendary La Mamounia followed by pre-dinner cocktails in The Churchill Bar.  So enjoyed two legends in one visit – La Mamounia and The Churchill Bar. Churchill is just one of the many legendary figures who loved Mamounia.

The Mamounia is the grand lady of Marrakech Hotels. Always refined and elegant with just that feel of true class and magical at night. Even my G&T had added class – a special tonic and a twist of cucumber!

La Mamounia ambiance manages to create the feeling that their service will be discrete and exemplary – and it is.

After the elegance of La Mamounia’s Churchill Bar we enjoyed the contrast of Bo-Zin’s trendy atmosphere for dinner.

We ate a la carte – the menu started with eastern influenced appetizers and moved on to Moroccan inspired mains while smooth and soulful sounds complimented the food and decor.

Bo-Zin is a venue for the hip and trendy locals who enjoy the bar, food and music – they arrive late.

Day Two kicked off with a 4X4 Atlas Mountain Experience

Our first stop was Richard Branson’s hotel – a place to escape, chill, relax and enjoy.  You can be pampered by over 120 staff to 27 rooms.

You can feel the silence in the tranquil beauty of Kasbah Tamadot’s location. Kasbah Tamadot commands views down the green valleys while also looking up to the stark beauty of the highest Atlas peaks.

Immerse yourself in the Kasbah’s privacy and simply chill or raise the pace with onsite professional tennis coaching, trekking and other offsite activities.

Off road “The Roof of Africa” is a place of space, clean light, beauty and peace. The Atlas Mountains are one of those special places – a place that lowers voices and inspires; leaving one feeling so chilled it is amazing.

And we had already been chilled by the beauty and calm of Richard Branson’s Kasbah Tamadot.

Our 4×4 was chauffeured – had we been on self drive the off-road challenge may have robbed us of the opportunity to relax and enjoy the stunning views.

A lakeside lunch under Berber tents kept the chilled out feeling going.

Beautiful views, fantastically healthy fresh Berber food and warm fresh air made a great outdoor experience. This is a great place to dine at night.

Next stop a great multi space venue on the outskirts of Marrakech.  A place where you can turn up the volume if you wish.

The Beldi Country Club is designed for corporate entertaining, dining, partying or celebrating in beautiful settings and until the early hours. The multiple indoor and outdoor spaces cater for groups from tens to fifteen hundred.

Beldi’s location mean that your music does not have to turn down or off before you want it to.

Our group split – some chose the Beldi Spa – a wonderful Hamman treatment at Beldi and the rest to shop in the Souks.

Souk shopping is unlike any other.

Smells of leather, rich scented oils, spices and herbs, the colours and…… The fun of bartering.

Winding alleyways both add mystery to the exotic goods and the need for a guide unless you want to spend more time finding your way out than you do shopping.

If we were offering a prize for the best barter it would have been the large colourful tagine initially offered at 1200 dirham’s but bought at 200!!!

Others bought boots, tagines, saffron and some wonderful bars of amber, sandalwood and other spices.

Post shopping and a walk through El Fna Square it was back to Sofitel to join up with the others and freshen up ahead of dinner.

A 360 degree rooftop bar, Namazake Japanese restaurant, lovely night views, soft lights, music and great company was our venue for pre-dinner cocktails.  The Delano hotel was a few minutes’ walk from the Sofitel.

The Delano Hotel (soon to be renamed The Pearl) has a cool sophisticated intimate feel at night. Not surprising as it was designed by the architect responsible for La Mamounia’s refurbishment.

After two not so quick drinks and sushi our carriages for dinner were waiting. This being Marrakech it was horse drawn carriages and they were to take as close to our dinner venue as they could.  To shorten our walk through the Medina.

After a few minutes’ walk we walked through the doors of a Moroccan Doctor Who’s Tardis!!!

This seems the best explanation of the surprise to be had on entering the Palais Stylia. There is not anything outside to suggest the interior – narrow streets, endless walls and occasional unremarkable doors but…after the entrance corridor -WOW.

Elegant, ornate, intricate and with ceilings so high the acoustics are wonderful if you are having live music during dinner.

Rose petal strewn tables, handmade cloths and…… The food. Four special courses proposed by Chakib some with slight variations/options to reflect dietary preferences along with great Moroccan wines.

Palais Stylia offers the main dining room and two further rooms able to seat 120 for private dinners.

Day 3 Hotel Visits

Light, space and creativity fill Marrakech’s Four Seasons – you could almost feel the Moroccan sunshine indoors.

Loved the Four Seasons pop up bars – The Speakeasy themed bar was fun and I am looking forward to the Cuban pop up bar opening soon.

Marrakech hotels are blessed with style and the Four Seasons is no exception – a blend of contemporary, art and chic modern Moroccan influences combine to provide a beautiful experience.

The 600 sq m main meeting space offers natural light, height and great access while breakout rooms have daylight to.

Palais Namasker was next on our list but as we received requests to visit the Taj Palace this was a late fit in for a few of our group.

It only took seven years to build this luxury Feng Shui hotel haven – opened six months ago.

Forty one rooms, suites, villas and palaces spread over twelve acres of delightful gardens, pools and lake.  Rooms are generous – at least forty four sqms and palaces/villas go up to 3000. All are joined by the spirit of Feng Shui and guests are pampered by over two hundred staff.

This is Palais Namasker - Morocco Feng Shui style.

The other group visited the Taj Palace Hotel, another style and a great 300 room luxury property.

We rejoined and set off for Marrakech’s beautiful palm groves twenty minutes away.

Hotel du Golf, is new, modern & contemporary with 315 rooms. Du Golf is part of Marrakech’s biggest hotels, villas, and conference centre complex. The recently refurbished Palmeraie Golf Palace, with a more modern Moroccan style, offers another 325 rooms.

Two boutique suite hotels, villas and apartments add another 493 units.

All hotels have close access to a 5,000 sq metre conference centre – the largest meeting space host 1,500 pax – and also have access to the golf course and 8 restaurants.

Finally, a twenty five minute drive back to the Sofitel for lunch and our last show round before departing for the airport.

Lunch on the Sofitel terrace close to the pool was our final taste of Marrakech. The buffet lunch was superb, accompanied by poolside entertainment and personal gifts from Chakib.

As we had all seen the Sofitel rooms during our stay we had a quick show round the meetings spaces, all with daylight - and my favourite Sofitel meeting space … the nightclub.

Our thanks to our friends Sally, Holly and Clare from Penguins Events for bringing a fun group of clients and yet more thanks to Chakib from our DMC Across Morocco for a brilliant programme, Sofitel for accommodating us and Noor for being our guide and excellent company.

February 1 to February 4 2013 – Istanbul Fam Trip

Sunday, February 17th, 2013

Amazing Istanbul is growing and the list of impressive hotels is extending. Dining is a total pleasure and the night life ….!!!! Ten hotels and eight venues in 2 days plus met Osman, his delightful family and pets at his home.

Istanbul is such an exciting, popular, destination that leading brands are lining up to open – Shangri La is aiming for an April/May 2013 and Raffles should follow soon after. Last month a luxury phoenix rose from the ashes – literally. The famed Grand Tarabya, favourite haunt of movie makers, had closed and suffered a fire only to be rebuilt as an amazing Conference and Incentive hotel. Tarabya “opened” exclusively for a g2o client conference for over 400 pax.

With the competition “hotting” up and such excellent properties opening these last few years It is not surprising that the established 5 star hotels are stepping up their game.

We saw a brilliant newly refurbished hotel – a modern classical touch with a seamless style from reception through bedrooms and the meetings spaces. Meeting spaces are light, airy and inviting. However, the biggest wow is reserved for the restaurant – a series of open kitchens!!!

Other 5*’s are planning to refurbish – add separate showers in bathrooms, free Wi-Fi in rooms and at least a coffee maker. The newer hotels also have under floor heating in bathrooms.

The Ciragan still offers that spot on service … and the breakfast … fabulous . The best I have ever experienced and Baris, the Sales Director’s, impressed us over breakfast with his immense knowledge of Turkish specialist wine and food, suppliers and sources. Thanks Baris for the walnut recipe and thank you for having this dish added to our breakfast.

We had a unique show round by g20′s friends in the Shangri La’s sales team – a hard hat preview tour of all of the show rooms. Ordinarily only 1 or 2 show bedrooms can be shown but our friends also showed us rooms that only staff and builders had seen prior to our tour. We are waiting to see the finished building. AND contrary to the suggestions circulating the lower 6 floors are underground but not immersed in the Bosphorus.

Too many places to eat, too little time. So we experienced a range. The best Kebab house in Istanbul, followed by roof top drinks in a late night bar with views over the hill to the Bosphorus Bridge. Saturday night’s dinner was brilliant – a lovely restaurant with great view of the bridge, superb service and the Mediterranean/Ottoman menu was…..wonderful.

Lunch on Sunday and another change of style – The House Cafe popular with the locals and on the river front. High quality and inexpensive – I loved the pomegranate sauce on my grilled salmon salad.

And, sadly as it meant our stay was ending Sunday dinner was in the middle of the Bosphorus. We tried a gala dinner menu in Gaye’s favourite fish restaurant.Three days and not a glass of Chardonnay in sight – why would you drink imported wine/European grapes when Turkey was the world’s first wine producer and makes some amazing white and red wines.

Finally, as Valentines approaches, for those thinking of weddings Istanbul plays host to a large number of UK couples’ weddings. One hotel we viewed has 8 UK weddings booked in for this summer and there are a number of dinner venues which are as fabulous for large scale weddings as they are for Corporate Events.

And a sad goodbye to our wonderful friend at g2o Turkey our DMC.

Lisbon Discovered – Have You Heard..

Saturday, January 12th, 2013

A secret  Lisbon revealed with secluded white sandy beaches, 5* design hotel and 4* Conference hotel. This area of Lisbon, a protected region and rural peninsula, is well known to Lisboans and certain famous sports people/wealthy individuals who own property here. Somehow the MICE market has missed learning of this great location and its facilities.

We only became aware of this region of Lisbon as the DMC we work with in Portugal proposed the Conference Hotel to meet a very difficult brief – a large number of rooms and very low B&B rate with early February availability. Competing agencies were unable to find a conference hotel venue for this brief- seems few venues finders in the UK know it exists.

Feeling intrigued and that we deserved a post Christmas break with a little sunshine we decided to update ourselves on Lisbon and take a closer look at the area and the conference hotel.

The hotels are about 40 to 60 minutes from central Lisbon/Lisbon airport depending on how you decide to travel. A shorter road journey followed by a 1 minute ferry crossing or the longer road route.

We discovered amazing connections to the UK dating back to the 1920′s when a British family/company extended the drainage in the area in order to develop rice production. Rice is still a significant crop but the British have moved on.

Most of the peninsula is rural, however, there are some great intimate restaurants and a number of large dinner venues, a casino, small harbour with bars/cafes/restaurants and there is always a ferry crossing to the local town which has more night life/dining options. And for local activity you have an international golf course, great clear blue sea, immense white sandy beaches, sailing and …..
